An ongoing and key part of IFFO’s celebration of Canadian and world cinema is its one-day annual conference, SAVE AS, dedicated to examining issues of preservation, restoration, distribution, and exhibition of the always-endangered world cinema heritage. SAVE AS consists of expert panel discussions, case studies of restored cinema classics, and premiere screenings of those restored classic films. At IFFO, we are committed to cinema’s past as well as its present and future. Once again in 2024, we are inviting to Ottawa several noted professionals working in important and exciting ways on the preservation and presentation of Canada’s and the world’s cinematic heritage.

Panel Presentation: International Spotlight: Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna

What is happening in the world of film restoration globally? Starting in 2024 and into the future, SAVE AS will address this question by showcasing one important international institution dedicated to the restoration and preservation of world cinema heritage, as well as its distribution and exhibition to audiences around the world. The inaugural institution for this Spotlight will be the world-renowned Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna in Italy which is a world leader in the fields of preservation and restoration of some of the most important works in cinema history. Cineteca’s Head of Research & Special Projects, Cecilia Cenciarelli will give a presentation on the Cineteca’s activities and international outreach to like institutions in Canada and across the world.

Restoration Case Study I: Guy Maddin’s Archangel

Presented by the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC)

An intimate and interactive examination of how Winnipeg film artist Guy Maddin’s second feature film, Archangel (1990), came to be restored. The interview with Maddin will be conducted by Canadian Film Institute Executive Director Tom McSorley and will provide clips and various artifacts of the restoration process, undertaken in collaboration with the Toronto-based filmmaker Ron Mann and his company FilmsWeLike.

Restoration Case Study II: Timothy Findley’s The Wars directed by Robin Phillips
Presented in partnership with the Canadian Media Producers Association, LGBT Purge Fund, NFB and Fasken.

3:15 pm - 4:30 pm

This in-depth discussion will explore the film adaptation and restoration of Timothy Findley’s Governor General’s Prize–winning novel, The Wars (1977).  Produced in 1983 by Nielsen-Ferns International in collaboration with the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), it was the NFB’s first ever collaboration on a narrative feature film with a commercial production company. 

Directed by Robin Phillips - former Artistic Director of Canada’s Stratford Festival - The Wars showcases a brilliant roster of Canadian talents including Brent Carver, Martha Henry, Bill Hutt, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Jackie Burroughs, Jean LeClerc and Susan Wright. Original music by Glenn Gould. 

One of the largest and most ambitious productions of its day – winner of multiple Genie Awards - the film mysteriously disappeared from public distribution shortly after its release. In 2020, The Wars resurfaced after a 35-year absence via the Encore+ YouTube channel created by the Canada Media Fund and a wealth of industry partners. 

In 2022, the film’s restoration was commissioned by the Encore+ in collaboration with Telefilm Canada, with support from the NFB, Torstar Corporation and the Stratford Festival. 

Executive Producer Pat Ferns, along with key collaborators involved in the film’s restoration and material preservation, Steve Hallé, Director, Technical Resources, NFB, and actor Jean LeClerc will be interviewed by panel programmer Paulina Abarca-Cantin.

Cette discussion approfondie portera sur l'adaptation cinématographique et la restauration du roman de Timothy Findley, Guerres (The Wars) (1977), lauréat du Prix du Gouverneur général.  Produite en 1983 par Nielsen-Ferns International en collaboration avec l'Office national du film du Canada (ONF), il s'agissait de la toute première collaboration de l'ONF à un long métrage narratif avec une société de production commerciale.

Réalisé par Robin Phillips - ancien directeur artistique du Festival de Stratford - Guerres (The Wars) (1983) met en vedette une brillante distribution de talents canadiens, dont Brent Carver, Martha Henry, Bill Hutt, Ann-Marie MacDonald, Jackie Burroughs, Jean LeClerc et Susan Wright. Musique originale de Glenn Gould.

L'une des productions les plus importantes et les plus ambitieuses de son époque - lauréate de plusieurs prix Génie - le film a mystérieusement disparu de la distribution publique peu de temps après sa sortie. En 2020, Guerres (The Wars) (1983) refait surface après 35 ans d'absence grâce à la chaîne YouTube Encore+ créée par le Fonds des médias du Canada et une multitude de partenaires de l'industrie.

En 2022, la restauration du film a été commandée par Encore+ en collaboration avec Téléfilm Canada, avec le soutien de l'ONF, de Torstar Corporation et du Festival de Stratford. 

Le producteur exécutif Pat Ferns, ainsi que les principaux collaborateurs impliqués dans la restauration et la préservation matérielle du film, Steve Hallé, directeur, ressources techniques, NFB, et l'acteur Jean LeClerc, seront interviewés par la programmatrice Paulina Abarca-Cantin.
